The CARES Act Charitable Giving Incentives

To encourage more charitable giving in 2020, the recently enacted Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) provides some additional tax relief for donors.

Gifts of cash (money order) or personal check are generally tax deductible up to 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. Any excess can be carried over for five years. Send your gift to Rensselaer via secure lockbox:

Corporate Gift Match

You or your spouse may work for one of more than 22,000 companies that encourage and support employee philanthropy through corporate gift match programs. By completing a matching gift application, you can double the value of your gift.

Reunion Giving

Reunion & Homecoming is a great time to make a gift to Rensselaer in honor of your Class, affinity group, or team. Your gift helps the next generation of Rensselaer alumni—our current students. You can become a part of history by joining your classmates, teammates, and friends, and making your reunion class gift to Rensselaer.

ECAV Pavers

Rensselaer parents and friends have the special opportunity to honor a student’s years of hard work and dedication with an engraved paver. Pavers are displayed at the East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV) Plaza.

Stocks and Bonds

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, and/or mutual funds that have been held for one or more years can be great tax savers for donors since the capital gain tax on unrealized appreciation is waived. The full fair market value of gifts of long-term securities or real estate is tax deductible up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. Any amount over the 30% maximum can be carried over for five years.

Please contact Gift Planning for information on gifting securities that are traded on foreign exchanges.

Personal Property

Many items of tangible personal property make suitable charitable gifts. The available tax deduction depends on whether or not the organization will use the property in a way that is related to its tax-exempt purpose.
