Strategic learning opportunities at Rensselaer enable our students to excel in the classroom and beyond. Programs such as research in the signature thrust areas and participation in athletics contribute to an educational experience that is rigorous, holistic, multifaceted, and supportive.
Expanding the Research Enterprise
Under The Rensselaer Plan, research was invigorated by taking risks to achieve impact and moving into new domains of significance at the intersections of important disciplines. The result was the growth of sponsored research expenditures to $100 million, with a goal of reaching over $200 million by 2024. In the next decade, The Rensselaer Plan 2024 will link the strengths of the Institute in five signature research thrusts to challenges facing the world at large, and empower Rensselaer to be a transformative force in solving them. Driven by talented, dedicated, and forward-thinking faculty, Rensselaer will focus on five signature research thrusts – biotechnology and the life sciences; computational science and engineering/IT; nanotechnology and advanced materials; media, arts, science, and technology; and energy, environment, and smart systems.
The Office of the Vice President for Research oversees the five signature research thrusts at Rensselaer, in addition to the centers where this critical research takes place.
Your support of research at Rensselaer enables students to play a part in the solving of the global challenges. Gifts in support of research can be made to the endowment and the Rensselaer Annual Fund.
