Andrew Sands, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in lower Manhattan. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (served on the AAOS board of surgical subspecialties), a member of the American Orthopedic Association (the orthopedic leadership society), and a member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (served on the AOFAS board). He is a founding member of the Spinoza Society. Dr. Sands specializes in orthopedic trauma and reconstructive surgery of the lower extremity/ foot and ankle, as well as sports medicine, arthroscopy and joint arthroplasty.
He has authored peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and edited two textbooks. He has been a visiting professor nationwide and an invited speaker internationally. He has chaired orthopedic courses in the United States as well as internationally.
Dr. Sands has also been involved with an international NGO, the AO Foundation, based in Davos, Switzerland. The AO is a prestigious international scientific think tank. Dr. Sands served as chairman of the foot and ankle expert group and on the trauma technical committee. He is a past president of the Brooklyn Orthopedic Society.
Dr. Sands earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he became interested in structure, function, biomechanics, and material science. After earning his medical degree from New York Medical College, he completed a surgical internship at Saint Luke’s-Roosevelt Medical Center, and an orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Dr. Sands subsequently served with the US Navy in Saudi Arabia attached to the Marine Expeditionary Force during the Gulf War / Operation Desert Shield/Storm
After completion of active duty, he received advanced clinical experience / fellowship in lower extremity trauma and reconstruction in Seattle at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center.
